“Star Trek 2” Set For May 17th 2013 | News | Dark Horizons

With Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi epic “Singularity” having departed the coveted May 17th 2013 slot, Paramount Pictures has dived right in and slotted the much anticipated “Star Trek” sequel for that date.

Deadline adds that the film will be shown in 3D, but it presently isn’t known if it will be shot that way or converted in post-production. Shooting on the project kicks off January 15th with J.J. Abrams at the helm.

Abrams has also confirmed to MTV News that the rumour of Benicio del Toro as the villain is real, but things are still very early days yet – “Well, we’re just in negotiations, we’re in discussions. It’s not even negotiations, just in discussion. But I would love to work with him. I’ve wanted to work with him for years, and this felt like a good opportunity.”

Finally composer Michael Giacchino has confirmed to Coming Soon that he’ll be returning to compose the film’s score.
