Geeks Making the World a Better Place

Every little (and big) geek dreams of the day when they can just hang with their favorite fictional character and go get a burger or something.  Oh yeah, me and the B-man for a day- I would find out what’s in all the pouches on that belt and a test drive of the batmobile would definitely be on the agenda! Dreams would come true people.

The Make A Wish Foundation is in the business of making dreams come true though, so when little 6 year old Zachary, who is currently battling Leukemia, wished he could meet and become Hellboy some serious phone calls were made. First, a secretive government agency was called- a.k.a. Spectral Motion the creature effects house that brought Hellboy to life for Del Toro. Then Spectral Motion issued the mission orders to the man himself, Ron Perlman, who hopped into the make-up chair for 4 hours to don the make-up and full Hellboy costume. Then bearing burgers and shakes Hellboy made Zachary’s wish come true by coming by to hang out for the afternoon with the very happy little boy.

The studio even went a step further and the next day transformed Zachary into his own pint sized version of his hero and fulfilled his wish to become Hellboy himself.

Hand that boy a gun and let’s rock!

Kudo’s to Specrtal Motion and to Mr. Perlman for creating the event of a lifetime for a true little fan.

And speaking of Make a Wish,  yesterday July 7th marks the start of Course for the Force a 4 day marathon that ends at the opening of San Diego Comic Con set up by Chris Hardwick, the man behind Nerdist Industries, to raise money for the foundation. Think Olympic Torch run but replace the torches with light sabers.  As geeks we are focused, driven, and obsessive people by nature. It warms the very cockles of my heart to see those drives and obsessions being used to make the world a better place a little bit at a time.

Watch this video by Chris Hardwick about the event- it’s pretty epic.
