Welcome to our countdown to the most anxiety-inducing horror films for parents!  Today is day seven.

Each day, we are covering the films I both love and hate because they’re awesome and they give me panic attacks now that I’m a mom.

Today’s film and all that can fit into its category are some of the most notorious, most terrifying and, let’s be honest, some of the most fun horror films of the last 40 years.  However, just because they are fun to watch does not by any means mean we are not affected by their scares in a whole new way as parents.  Today we talk about some of the “old standards” in horror.

Disclaimer: Trigger warnings are a given when you talk about horror, but I’m going to say it anyway.  Many subjects covered by horror films are disturbing to parents in ways we can’t possibly understand and each is unique to the parent and his/her experiences. Tread carefully and know your limits.  If this begins to be too much, there’s no shame in closing the window.  Also, this post contains some spoilers throughout.

Today’s collection is a cross between horror and medical thrillers.  A group we don’t like to think about, even something we try to force out of our minds entirely.  Why?  Because like so many others, it’s not the blood, the over-acting, the special effects that get to us anymore.  It is the very real possibility which makes these films terrifying for any parent.

Today’s movies are special to my heart, as they each include a very special child.  A child who loves her shoes, a child who loves his mother, a child who was never understood, a child who protects his friends and a child who dreams of escaping with her dearest friend.

Today, it’s all about one subject that cannot be avoided by most parents.  A subject that no matter what you do, from the moment you see any of these films until your children are completely out of school entirely will be a part of your lives…

Every so often, geeks get a chance to have an epic experience meeting their heroes and idols.  If we’re lucky, we accidentally bump into them at conventions and have a brief, flustered moment where we blurt out things like, “OMGILOVEYOUYOUAREMYHEROPLEASESIGNTHISICANTBREATHEWHATSMYNAMEAGAIN!?!?!

Oh …maybe that’s just me?

ANYway…

Rare is the moment when a true fan is able to immerse themselves in the culture of their favorite thing in a small room where the creator can be seen casually wandering around, the voices of your idols are willing to take photos and listen to you no matter how flustered you sound, and the friends and family of cast and crew are hanging out as though they’re just regular folks, totally approachable and kind to everyone.

Guys, my five year old got to have that moment.

That’s right, my five year old had that golden experience most fans wait lifetimes to have.  It took place at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra last night at the opening of the #FarewellToTheFalls exhibit, dedicated to the two-season hit on Disney XD; Gravity Falls, created by Alex Hirsch.

How many posts on Facebook and memes all over social media have you seen this week that start out something like; “If you play Pokemon Go, you are…” followed by words like stupid, out of touch, childish, have your head up your ass, are ignoring the horrors of the world, should be doing something more valuable with your time, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera… let’s find new ways to look down on one another, blah, blah blah. UGH. OVER IT. Continue reading

It’s that time of year again, folks!  The sun, the stars, the heat, the sweat, the billions of people milling around on missions to see actors, writers, directors and artists, going crazy with too much stimulus, not enough time and zero social skills.  That’s right friends- ComicCon San Diego is next week!

For parents, ComicCon is a bittersweet engagement full of all our favorite things and all our child’s favorite things, PLUS all the things they’re not allowed to touch, see, go anywhere near or break.

For the novice convention goer who is also a parent, the SD ComicCon can be a wild jungle of danger and disaster waiting to happen.  For those of you who have never been but will be taking your children for the first time this year, I thought I’d create a little top 10 list for you. Keep in mind, this list is based on what I wish someone had told ME, before we took our baby of 9 months old into one of the most insane places on Earth for 5 days.  So here we go…  Continue reading
