Epix Orders A Series About Batman’s Butler

Premium cable network Epix has handed out a ten-episode, straight-to-series order for “Pennyworth,” a drama set in the Batman universe from “Gotham” showrunner Bruno Heller and executive producer Danny Cannon.

The origin story will revolve around Alfred Pennyworth, loyal butler to Bruce Wayne, in the time when he gives up his position as a former British SAS soldier to work for Bruce’s father Thomas Wayne in 1960s London.

The series is NOT a spin-off of Batman prequel series “Gotham” despite Heller, Cannon and Warner Horizon’s involvement, so actor Sean Pertwee who plays Alfred Pennyworth on that series is not involved. Heller will pen the script and executive produce, Cannon will direct the pilot and executive produce (same arrangement as with “Gotham”).

Jeremy Irons, Michael Gough, Michael Caine, Alan Napier, Efrem Zimbalist Jr. and William Austin have all played the role of Alfred Pennyworth over the years.
