Guess Which Villain Has Been Confirmed for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘The Avengers 2’ | Movie News | Movies.com

Some big Marvel news has come to light this afternoon – Thanos, the Mad Titan, appears to be a lock to serve not only as a villain in James Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but he’ll also square off against Earth’s mightiest heroes in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2. Let that soak in for a moment.

Thanos Marvel Comics

Cosmic Book News nabbed the official scoop when Armand Rock spoke with Thanos creator and rights holder Jim Starlin at the Montreal Comic-Con. Starlin confirmed that a deal is in place for the character to appear in both films.

With this new insight, we can begin to see just what Marvel has in store for Phase 2 of its movie empire. Thanos is now positioned as the new Loki – and we’ll be introduced to the character in Guardians before seeing him in the main event in Avengers 2. You really have to tip your hat to the guys at Marvel – they’ve figured out how to bring these beloved comic characters to new audiences without ever selling them short in the process. The idea of introducing characters in one film as the setup for the big payoff in another is inspired and has almost assuredly helped new comic fans get in on the action without being lost as to who these lesser-known players are.

That Thanos will be involved in both films is not exactly Earth-shattering news. Comic movie geeks have suspected Marvel would move in this direction for some time (especially after his brief cameo at the end of The Avengers), but it’s nice to finally get confirmation. Now, the question becomes whether or not we’ll see Starlin’s other creation – Adam Warlock and his evil alter ego Magus – in these films. Internet gossip earlier this month indicated that we would, but there’s been no official word yet. We’ll bring you more on all this Marvel madness as new details emerge.
