AMC\u2019s Preacher<\/em> pilot is an ultra violent, shockingly witty, heightened reality tale of supernatural mayhem in a West Texas town \u2014 and it\u2019s\u00a0very<\/em> different from the infamous gleefully blasphemous trope-busting\u00a0comic that it\u2019s based on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know that you could translate it directly [from the comic],\u201d said executive producer Seth Rogen (yup, that Seth Rogen). \u201cEverybody involved felt we should not \u2014\u00a0including [comic creator\u00a0Garth Ennis].\u201d<\/p>\n

The show\u2019s producers and cast were at the Television Critics Association\u2019s press tour in Pasadena, California, on Friday after reporters were given a preview screening of the roughly 60-minute pilot the night prior. The first episode introduces Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), a weary faithless small-town preacher with a shady past, his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip O\u2019Hare (Ruth Negga) and a deadbeat Irish vampire Cassidy (Joe Gilgun).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re fans of the comic,\u201d Rogen continued. \u201cWe love the comic. We\u2019re going to make a show we like, so we hope that that translates to people that love the comic as well.\u00a0 But our first and foremost goal is to make a great, entertaining, fun television show that if you never heard of the comic book, you love. We want the show to be fun for regular people without sick sensibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics were particularly impressed by Negga\u2019s scene-stealing sequence soliciting two young kids to help her fight some (presumed) bad guys. While\u00a0Cassidy should\u00a0continue to The Strain<\/em>\u2019s trend of subverting vampire clich\u00e9s. \u201cWhat\u2019s wonderful about Cassidy is he\u2019s been around for so long yet he\u2019s accomplished nothing,\u201d\u00a0Gilgun said. \u201cHe consistently makes terrible decisions \u2026 He\u00a0puts an end to all this sexy vampire business.\u201d<\/p>\n
