It is currently being developed as a series at Cinemax.<em>\u00a0<\/em><a id=\"auto-tag_marvel-comics\" href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/marvel-comics\/\" data-tag=\"marvel-comics\">Marvel Comics<\/a> writer and creator <a id=\"auto-tag_brian-michael-bendis\" href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/brian-michael-bendis\/\" data-tag=\"brian-michael-bendis\">Brian Michael Bendis<\/a>, who co-created <em>Scarlett<\/em> with artist Alex Maleev, let the news slip\u00a0today that the property is being developed as a series\u00a0at <a id=\"auto-tag_hbo\" href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/hbo\/\" data-tag=\"hbo\">HBO<\/a>. Deadline has confirmed that the project indeed is in development but at HBO sibling Cinemax.\u00a0Bendis, co-creator of the Marvel character <em>Jessica Jones<\/em> and the long-running Marvel\/Icon title <em><a id=\"auto-tag_powers\" href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/powers\/\" data-tag=\"powers\">Powers<\/a><\/em>, both which have been adapted for television, spoke of the potential<em> Scarlett<\/em>\u00a0TV series at the <a id=\"auto-tag_atx-television-festival\" href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/atx-television-festival\/\" data-tag=\"atx-television-festival\">ATX Television Festival<\/a> in Austin.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"related-article\">\n<div class=\"pad\">\n<div class=\"clear\">Speaking about his ongoing comics work, Bendis said \u201cI do a book called <em>Scarlet\u00a0<\/em>which is soon to be announced also in our universe of television. Not announced yet, but HBO.\u201d Bendis was careful to add that the project is \u201cat the earliest stage,\u201d but that \u201cthe team around it\u2026will be announced as soon as all are on the same page.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>First published in 2010, the series follows a rebellious young Portland, Oregon woman named Scarlet Rue who ends up sparking a second American revolution. Drawing comparisons to (among other things) <em>The Punisher<\/em> in tone, the series is known for confrontational politics and intense violence. As Bendis put it during today\u2019s panel, \u201c<em>Scarlet<\/em> is a list of things you can\u2019t get made. Here\u2019s a female lead who\u2019s killing cops because her world is broken.\u201d But, he says, \u201cwhen it was sold it was sold to people who were actively looking for that, so that put us in a good place. So stay tuned.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"recent-comments\">\n<div class=\"sign-in desktop\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"comment comment3\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\">Like <em>Powers<\/em>, <em>Scarlet<\/em> runs on Icon Comics, the creator-owned imprint Marvel launched in 2004 in part to bring Bendis and his <em>Powers<\/em> co-creator Michael Avon Oeming and <em>Kabuki<\/em> creator David Mack over from Image Comics. Among other titles, Icon is also the home of Mark Millar\u2019s <em>Kick Ass<\/em> and <em>The Secret Service<\/em>, both of which received film adaptations directed by Matthew Vaughn.
