Netflix is bringing another superhero story to life.<\/p>\n

The streaming giant has greenlit a series based on \u201cThe Umbrella Academy\u201d comic books, Universal Cable Productions announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Universal Cable Prods. is producing the series along with Dark Horse Entertainment and Bluegrass Television for Netflix, which has ordered 10 episodes for the first season. The show will premiere in 2018.<\/p>\n

Based on the comics and graphic novels of the same name, \u201cUmbrella Academy\u201d\u00a0is a live-action series that follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes, known as The Umbrella Academy \u2014 The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The S\u00e9ance, Number Five, The Horror, and The White Violin \u2014 as they work together to solve their father\u2019s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.<\/p>\n

The comics were created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel B\u00e1 and published by\u00a0Dark Horse Comics. Way will serve as a co-executive producer on the series, which will be adapted for television by writer Jeremy Slater who penned the pilot.\u00a0Steve Blackman will serve as show runner and executive producer with\u00a0Mike Richardson and\u00a0Keith Goldberg.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am thrilled that \u2018The Umbrella Academy\u2019 has found a home at Netflix. I couldn\u2019t think of a better place for the vision Gabriel B\u00e1 and myself had when creating the comic, and cannot wait for people to experience that world as a live action show,\u201d Way said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat drew us to \u2018The Umbrella Academy\u2019\u00a0is that it\u2019s wholly unique, visual, and stylized,\u201d said Cindy Holland, Netflix\u2019s vice president of original content. \u201cThese aren\u2019t the usual superheroes, and this series will embrace the singular tone of the graphic novels \u2014 dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded in reality. We\u2019re excited to see this world and introduce these unforgettable heroes to Netflix members around the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a thrill to be producing this wonderful show for Netflix. It\u2019s been a passion project for the UCP development crew and we can\u2019t wait to bring it to life,\u201d added Jeff Wachtel, chief content officer of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and president of UCP.<\/p>\n

For Netflix, \u201cUmbrella Academy\u201d marks the latest series in the comic book genre, following a slew of Marvel series, including \u201cDaredevil,\u201d \u201cJessica Jones,\u201d \u201cIron Fist,\u201d \u201cLuke Cafe,\u201d \u201cThe Defenders,\u201d and \u201cThe Punisher.\u201d<\/p>\n
