Lucasfilm has announced that \u201cIron Man\u201d and \u201cThe Jungle Book\u201d director Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action \u201cStar Wars\u201d TV series for Disney\u2019s direct-to-consumer platform launching in late 2019.<\/p>\n

Favreau, who has played roles in both the \u201cStar Wars: The Clone Wars\u201d animated series and the upcoming \u201cSolo: A Star Wars Story,\u201d is a natural fit for the franchise and is currently in production on Disney\u2019s reimagining of \u201cThe Lion King\u201d set for release in 2019.<\/p>\n

Once he wraps work on that, he will then segue into doing the \u201cStar Wars\u201d series. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says in a statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though the choice is understandable for Disney who plays it safe, the decision has already been met with an outcry from fans and industry insiders who want a woman or person of color to helm a \u201cStar Wars\u201d project.<\/p>\n

The untitled \u201cStar Wars\u201d live-action series does not yet have a release date.<\/p>\n
