A new rumor has popped up indicating that this year\u2019s \u201cCall of Duty: Black Ops 4\u201d will NOT include a traditional single-player story mode, the first mainline game in the series to ship without a campaign.<\/p>\n

Polygon<\/a>\u00a0reported the story and when reached for comment, an Activision spokesperson told them: \u201cWe don\u2019t comment on rumor and speculation. We look forward to revealing Black Ops 4 on May 17th.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sources for the site say as the release date approached, it was evident the single-player campaign wouldn\u2019t be completed and so Treyarch has refocused development on expanding multiplayer and the series\u2019 popular Zombies mode.<\/p>\n

There will also be an emphasis on co-op as a potential stand-in for the typical single-player campaign experience. The game series initially built acclaim around its single-player campaigns but those have gotten shorter and shorter as the series became increasingly synonymous with multiplayer.<\/p>\n

Activision is expected to ship a remaster of \u201cCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2\u201d this year as well, and that will focus on the single-player campaign as it will be shipping without the original game\u2019s multiplayer component.<\/p>\n
