The expansion of\u00a0<\/span>CBS All Access<\/a>\u2019\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>universe continues with a\u00a0two-season order to\u00a0Star Trek: Lower Decks<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>a half-hour adult animated comedy series from\u00a0<\/span>Rick and Morty<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>head writer and executive producer\u00a0<\/span>Mike McMahan<\/a>, a long-time\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>fan.\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek: Lower Decks,<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>which will focus on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet\u2019s least important ships, marks CBS All Access\u2019 first original animated series and the first project to be produced by CBS Eye Animation Productions, a newly launched animation arm of CBS Television Studios.<\/p>\n

It hails from Alex Kurtzman\u2019s CBS TV Studios-based Secret Hideout, which had been spearheading the\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>franchise expansion, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout\u2019s Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin, Roddenberry Entertainment\u2019s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth as well as former Cartoon Network executive Katie Krentz will executive produce alongside McMahan. Aaron Baiers, who brought McMahan to the project, will serve as a co-executive producer.<\/p>\n

His son\u2019s name is Sagan. In 2011 McMahan started a Twitter account where he posted episode plots to a fake season of\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek: The Next Generation.<\/em>\u00a0They were such a hit that Simon & Schuster hired him to write a readers\u2019 guide to a fictitious eighth season of\u00a0<\/span>TNG<\/em>\u00a0titled\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek: The Next Generation: Warped: An Engaging Guide to the Never-Aired 8th Season.\u00a0<\/span><\/em>At All Access\/CBS TV Studios, he also is a writer on the\u00a0<\/span>Start Trek: Short Treks<\/em>\u00a0series of shorts.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a life-long Trekkie, it\u2019s a surreal and wonderful dream come true to be a part of this new era of\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek,<\/em>\u201d said McMahan. \u201cWhile\u00a0Star Trek: Lower Decks<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>is a half-hour, animated show at its core, it\u2019s undeniably\u00a0<\/span>Trek<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 and I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program.\u201d<\/p>\n

McMahan is head writer and executive producer on Adult Swim\u2019s hit animated seriesRick and Morty<\/em>, sharing in the show\u2019s Animated Program Emmy win last month. He also co-created and executive produces with\u00a0Rick and Morty<\/em>\u00a0co-creator\/executive producer\u00a0Justin Roiland\u00a0alien animated comedy series\u00a0<\/span>Solar Opposites<\/em>, which has a two-season order at Hulu via 20th TV.<\/p>\n

Star Trek: Lower Decks\u00a0<\/span><\/em>joins CBS All Access\/CBS TV Studios\u2019\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek: Discovery,\u00a0<\/em>returning for Season 2 in January,\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek: Short Treks,<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>a series of four short stories tied to\u00a0<\/span>Discovery<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>and the overall\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek\u00a0<\/span><\/em>universe,<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>as well as an upcoming untitled\u00a0<\/span>Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0series featuring Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard.<\/p>\n
