Sony PlayStation and Naughty Dog\u2019s highly acclaimed video game \u201cThe Last of Us\u201d is set to become an HBO TV series which will see \u201cChernobyl\u201d creator Craig Mazin serving as showrunner and executive producer.<\/p>\n

The game followed Ellie and Joel, a teenage girl and a hardened older male smuggler who navigate a zombie-ridden world two decades after a horrible fungal plague spread throughout humanity. It was released in 2013 and was awarded \u2018Game of the Year\u2019 honors by many outlets, along with selling more than 17 million copies.<\/p>\n

A film adaptation has been in the works for years but never quite coalesced, and was always seen as problematic due to the sheer density and quality of the game\u2019s long narrative being near impossible to compress to two hours without losing what makes it special.<\/p>\n

There are no such problems with a series format however, and in a rare development the game\u2019s writer and creative director Neil Druckmann will be heavily involved in the series and will work with Mazin to pen and executive produce.<\/p>\n

The series will reportedly cover the events of the original game along with new content and some elements likely in the forthcoming game sequel releasing late May.<\/p>\n

Carolyn Strauss and Naughty Dog president Evan Wells will also executive produce what will be the first television series from PlayStation Productions who plans to develop more properties based on PlayStation titles.<\/p>\n
