Danny Boyle<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Alex Garland<\/a>\u00a0have floated the idea of making a third \u201c28 Days Later<\/a>\u201d movie for years, but it now seems like the project, which is titled \u201c28 Months Later,\u201d is getting closer than ever to being a real possibility. Both Boyle and his \u201c28 Days Later\u201d star\u00a0Cillian Murphy<\/a>\u00a0expressed interest to NME<\/a>\u00a0in reuniting with screenwriter Garland for the next chapter in the zombie horror franchise. The duo were being interviewed for the 20th anniversary of the original film.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cEvery time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it,\u201d Murphy said about the next film. \u201cBecause I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it. It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that\u2019s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it\u2019s very appealing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garland\u2019s script for \u201c28 Months Later\u201d was written years ago and Boyle called it \u201ca lovely idea,\u201d adding, \u201cI\u2019d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually. It\u2019s funny, I hadn\u2019t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered \u2018Bang, this script!\u2019 which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we\u2019ll see\u2026 who knows?\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201c[\u201828 Months Later\u2019] might come back into focus because one of the things that\u2019s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema, because there are less and less reasons,\u201d Garland continued. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they\u2019re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it\u2019s something like\u00a0\u2018Top Gun: Maverick\u2019<\/em>\u00a0or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c28 Days Later\u201d is widely regarded as one of the best horror movies of the 2010s. Murphy plays a bike courier who awakens from a coma to discover England is in apocalyptic ruin due to a zombie virus. The film made $85 million at the worldwide box office on a production budget of only $8 million. Garland, Murphy and Boyle sat out the 2007 sequel, \u201c28 Weeks Later,\u201d which was directed Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, but the film kept acclaim high for the zombie franchise.<\/p>\n

Garland first stirred up buzz for a third \u201c28 Days Later\u201d movie in 2015 when\u00a0he told IGN<\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019ve just started talking about it seriously. We\u2019ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It\u2019s complicated. \u2026 It\u2019s more likely to be \u201828 Months\u2019 than \u201828 Years.\u2019 28 months gives you one more place to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given Murphy is 20 years older now from when the first movie opened in theaters, perhaps \u201c28 Years Later\u201d is the route to take after all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
