October 6th <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This morning and afternoon was chaotic- full of running errands, going to all our extracurriculars, then just a few hours home to rest up before making dinner and heading to tonight\u2019s Zombie Pageant<\/a> rehearsal. With only a few hours to spare while it was still daylight, we decided to introduce the kids to what is arguably the best monster movie in space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A classic for us, but new to the kids, today we watched Alien and introduced them to the world of Weyland Corp. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alien<\/h2>\n\n\n

Written by Dan O\u2019Bannon and Ronald Shusett and directed by Ridley Scott, this 1979 picture is almost as old as me, but still packs a punch. The crew of a tug ship called Nostromo encounters a signal unlike any they’ve heard before. Required by company law to check it out, they land on an unknown planetoid and encounter a deadly alien species while simultaneously battling one another’s survival instincts and ulterior motives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mild on the gore but officially one of the first truly “scary” movies we’ve seen, we prepped them by letting them know the cat doesn’t die, but almost all the people do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kids noticed right off the tech seemed more realistic than most space movies and shows. Lion observed that because it feels more like what a space ship might actually look like rather than what we\u2019ve seen in stories like Star Trek and Star Wars, it makes it more real, like it could actually happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also observed it felt like \u201cThe Office, Space Edition\u201d because everyone\u2019s arguing, bickering about their jobs and if they\u2019re getting paid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dragon thought it felt like the future if the computer in WarGames had been in charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cbig moment\u201d reactions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Face-hugger: 
<\/strong>Lion – \u201cWow. Wow. WOAH. WOW!!! Thats…. horrifying.”
Dragon – \u201cI want one!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First chest burster:
<\/strong>Dragon – \u201cCongratulations, it\u2019s a boy!\u201d
Lion – \u201cAwww\u2026. gross…. awww”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ash is a robot:
<\/strong>Lion: \u201cOh, well that makes sense\u201d
Dragon: \u201cWoah what is happening?!?! *robotics revealed* \u201cOhhhh that makes sense, only a robot would do that\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gonna blow up the ship\u201d
<\/strong>Lion: \u201cIt\u2019s about time”
Dragon: \u201cHooray arsen!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alien discovered on the shuttle:<\/strong>
Dragon: \u201caww baby sleeping\u201d
Lion: \u201cI mean\u2026 she didn\u2019t think it would be that easy, right? At least the cat’s asleep and safe\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dragon loved it, said it was scary, fun, the alien was awesome, “how do I get one!?”.
Lion said it was amazing, loved the artwork and the alien’s design, but made it clear they\u2019d never, EVER watch it again. They\u2019ll watch the sequels, but probably never that one, because it\u2019s terrifying. In fact, they said, “this is probably the scariest movie we’ll see this year”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little do they know\u2026. Muaaahahahahaha!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
