Netflix have clarified that it is now offering films in 3D and what it\u2019s calling \u201cSuper HD\u201d to subscribers with the right internet providers.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuper HD,\u201d I\u2019ll tell you up front, is actually just HD. It\u2019s 1080p, like a Blu-ray. There\u2019s already 1080p available from Netflix, it\u2019s just a little bit more compressed than Super HD. So Super HD is not super-super, then, but certainly how things should be done.<\/p>\n

The 3D films on offer right now are\u00a0Immortals, The Art of Flight,\u00a0African Wild,\u00a0Scary Tales\u00a0and\u00a0Live Fire – only the first of which is a narrative feature film. These have, I believe, been available for a week or two now and, of course, more will be added should the service prove popular. I hope it is, because that\u2019s not an exciting batch, really.<\/p>\n

Netflix are allowing these services to anybody hooked up with an IP who uses Netflix\u2019s own Open Connect content delivery system. You can test if your IP is one of them using the Super HD page. In the UK, both BT and Virgin are good to go \u2013 but we\u2019re still waiting for the Super HD and 3D content to pop up in our catalogues.<\/p>\n

At the same time, there are some hardware requirements. 3D is currently only available via Playstation 3 and a string of LG TV sets; Super HD is easier with Roku, Apple TV, Windows 8, the Wii U and lots more on the compatibility list.<\/p>\n
