American Gods<\/em>\u00a0producer\u00a0FremantleMedia North America<\/a>\u00a0has acquired the rights to\u00a0Astro City<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>superhero comic book series to develop as a live-action TV drama series.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that the comic books\u2019 current publisher, DC Comics, is owned by Warner Bros., Busiek owns all of the rights to\u00a0Astro<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>City,<\/em>\u00a0which he will now exploit in TV with FMNA.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0Astro City\u00a0<\/em>comics, created by writer Kurt Busiek and artists Brent Anderson and Alex Ross,\u00a0spans 16 (and counting) standalone yet loosely-connected story arcs containing more than 2,000 original characters.\u00a0It is claimed to be the last, fully fleshed out superhero universe in the English language comic book business that has not been exploited for the screen.\u00a0\u00a0Astro City<\/em>\u00a0made its debut in 1995 with Image Comics and is currently published by DC Comics.<\/p>\n

The fictional\u00a0Astro City<\/em>\u00a0universe explores the lives of ordinary people and those of the all-too-human superhumans in their midst, and their collective, daily struggle to hold on to hope in the face of world-shaking, life-altering events beyond any single individual\u2019s control.<\/p>\n

A mid-sized American city blessed with, and cursed by, the largest number of superheroes and supervillains in one place on Earth,\u00a0Astro City<\/em>\u00a0is described as a unique brand of humanistic saga \u2014 part superhero epic, part intimate drama \u2014 in which the (mostly) good hearted, workaday residents of the eponymous locale come into daily contact with the worrisome, the weird and the wondrous.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a thrill to be working with Rick, Gregory and FremantleMedia on this,\u201d said Busiek. \u201cEveryone, at every turn, is supportive, helpful and completely focused on capturing the feel of\u00a0Astro City<\/em>\u00a0and bringing it to life as a TV show.\u201dBusiek and Rick Alexander will pen the pilot episode. Gregory Noveck serves as executive producer of the proposed TV series, along with Alexander and Busiek, for FremantleMedia North America.<\/p>\n

Busiek has won over two dozen comics industry awards, including the Eisner and Harvey Awards for Best Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer, Best New Series and more. In addition to\u00a0Astro City<\/em>, Busiek\u2019s titles include\u00a0Arrowsmith, Shockrockets, Superstar: As Seen on TV, The Wizard\u2019s Tale, Jonny Demon, The Liberty Project<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Ransom.<\/em>\u00a0His most recent original comics series is\u00a0The Autumnlands<\/em>, with artist Benjamin Dewey.<\/p>\n

Alexander is currently executive producer on EuropaCorp Television\u2019s series version of Howard Chaykin\u2019s \u201980s sci-fi comic,\u00a0American Flagg!<\/em>, and is also developing UK comics creator Warren Ellis\u2019 horror infused military actioner,\u00a0Gravel,<\/em>\u00a0as a feature for Legendary Entertainment.<\/p>\n
