Already primed to directed a big-screen adaptation of Jack Kirby\u2019s\u00a0New Gods<\/em>,\u00a0as Deadline reported last year<\/a>, Oscar nominee DuVernay now\u00a0is getting behind the camera for\u00a0HBO Max<\/a>\u00a0with the\u00a0DMZ<\/a><\/em>\u00a0pilot the soon-to-be streamer has ordered.<\/p>\n

Adapted from the Brian Wood-written comic published by the Vertigo imprint, the pilot imagines a second American Civil War in the near future. The\u00a0A Wrinkle in Time<\/em>\u00a0helmer will direct the project with showrunner and EP\u00a0Roberto Patino<\/a>\u00a0writing. Prophetically well timed if Monday\u2019s tweetstorm by Donald Trump is any roadmap, the Manhattan-set\u00a0DMZ<\/em>\u00a0will be produced by DuVernay\u2019s\u00a0Array<\/a>\u00a0Filmworks in association with Warner Bros. Television.<\/p>\n

\u201cDMZ<\/em>\u00a0is a special project to me as it marks a key collaboration with my company Array Filmworks, the excellent team at Warner Bros TV and the dynamo Roberto Patino,\u201d DuVernay told Deadline today of the new project for the longtime comics fan.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The original<\/span>\u00a0DMZ<\/em>\u00a0takes place in a nation torn apart by the uneasy d\u00e9tente between the remains of the federal government and the secessionist Free State armies. With art by Riccardo Burchielli and printed by DC Comics under its Vertigo imprint from 2005-12, Wood\u2019s story is centered in the sparsely populated demilitarized zone of what once\u00a0was Manhattan.<\/span>\u201cWe\u2019ve all worked diligently on this material, and I\u2019ve witnessed Roberto in action,\u201d the 13th director added of her\u00a0Westworld<\/em>\u00a0EP collaborator. \u201cHe\u2019s insanely talented and cares about telling stories with maximum impact and imagination. I\u2019m eager to share this one with DC fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Patino-penned adaption is said to center on a female medic on the island who is trying day-in and day-out to help keep residents alive while trying to also find her lost son. In the process, that determined medic proves a source of hope in an America that has lost all sense of the idea.<\/p>\n

Both DuVernay and Patino have overall deals with Warner Bros Television, which were inked in\u00a0September<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0November<\/a>\u00a02018, respectively.<\/p>\n

Production on the\u00a0DMZ<\/em>\u00a0pilot is scheduled to begin in early 2020 \u2014 or just a few months before the WarnerMedia-owned\u00a0HBO Max launches<\/a>.<\/p>\n
