A new musical based on the 1985 film Back to the Future\u00a0will hit the stage in London’s West End next year, the Associated Press reports. The film’s original screenwriters, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale have teamed with British director Jamie Lloyd to write the book.<\/p>\n

They’ve also tapped Alan Selvestri to compose the music and Grammy-winning songwriter Glen Ballard (Alanis Morrissette, Michael Jackson) to write the lyrics. Selvestri has scored many of Zemeckis’ well-known films including\u00a0Romancing the Stone, Forrest Gump and Cast Away.<\/p>\n

The musical is timed to the original film’s 30th anniversary and promises to hone in on the quirky sci-fi element that fans loved in the Eighties. “The production will include illusions, skateboarding and many other surprises that will capture the spirit of the film but freshly interpret it for a new audience,” Lloyd said in a statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The original film followed Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, traveling back in time 30 years by way of a tricked-out Delorean. After becoming intertwined in his parents’ high school romance, McFly nearly causes a massive rift in the space-time continuum that threatens his existence.<\/p>\n

The film yielded Huey Lewis and the News’ first Number One hit on the Billboard 100 with their single “Power of Love” (Lewis also made a cameo in the film). It also featured an iconic scene where Fox introduces his parents to rock & roll by way of “Johnny B. Goode” at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance \u2013 the rocking guitar number prompted Marvin Berry, one of the backup band members, to call his cousin Chuck so he could hear this new sound over the phone.<\/p>\n

The Associated Press reports that if the show does well, it will consider a Broadway run.<\/p>\n
