Starz Plans “Ash vs. Evil Dead”
U.S. premium cable network Starz has given the greenlight to “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” a TV series follow-up to the original three Sam Raimi-directed “Evil Dead” movies.
Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell will return for the series which will consist of ten half-hour episodes and will debut next year.
Campbell reprises his role of Ash, the aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last three decades avoiding responsibility and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, he is finally forced to face his demons – both the personal and the literal.
Raimi will direct the pilot, which he will co-write with his brother Ivan along with Tom Spezialy “Chuck,” “Reaper”. Sam Raimi, Tapert and Campbell will executive produce, Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce, and Aaron Lam will produce.
Raimi and Tapert had great success with Starz in the past, helping the network branch out into original programming with the highly successful “Spartacus” TV series. Another upside is that Starz has no problem showcasing a bunch of nudity and creative gore, with the latter a key part of the franchise’s appeal.
“Ash vs. Evil Dead” will join Starz’s current line-up for 2015 which includes the likes of “Outlander,” “Black Sails,” “Da Vinci’s Demons” and “Power”.
