Evidenced by his success with “Cop Land,” “Walk the Line,” “3:10 To Yuma” and “Knight and Day,” James Mangold has a knack for turning populist entertainment into personal expression. But when 20th Century Fox announced that Mangold would be taking on “The Wolverine,” a sequel to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” his fans seemed concerned he might be overwhelmed by the enormity of a franchise sequel, and the constant scrutiny that seems to come with one. Never mind the fact that he’s directed critical and commercial darlings alike with Russell Crowe and Tom Cruise, and came away with fun, interesting pictures that still feel like they belong to him. But Mangold told The Playlist that he thought that a sequel was the best place for him to be able to imprint his personality on the property, since he’s unencumbered by the requirements of an ensemble piece or an origin story.

George R.R. Martin, the author behind HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” has sold another one of his projects to Hollywood.
SyFy Films, a theatrical division run under the auspices of NBC Universal, has purchased the movie rights to “Wild Cards,” a superhero anthology edited by Martin.
The anthology of 22 books dates back to 1987 and depicts a world in which an alien virus has been unleashed in New York, killing almost everyone put in contact with it.
Of the survivors, most have been rendered deformed while a few have gained superpowers.
This is the first acquisition for SyFy Films, which launched in December 2010.
“Wild Cards presents a terrific franchise opportunity given the volume of material from this compelling fantasy series,” Gregory Noveck, VP of Production at SyFy Film, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to develop a film based on the anthology’s supernatural heroes, and to be working with such talented and visionary writers as George R.R. Martin and Melissa Snodgrass.”
“Wild Cards” was created by a group of science fiction authors, but Martin took a leadership role in editing it and contributing. Melinda Snodgrass, who will write the script, has also been a contributor to the series, which is still producing new volumes thanks to the efforts of a bevy of writers.

There’s a beauty pageant going on in Redlands this weekend, and I imagine the scene as something like this: a well-heeled girl and her letterman jacket-clad date are cutting a trail across a cemetery in the cold of night, the guy goofing on the “dead” and the gal doing her little scary face “please, don’t” wimpy cry. Unbeknownst to them, out pops these bleach white, grotesquely misshapen faces, tiaras on heads of stringy, knotted hair. The girl turns around, screams, and clings onto her boyfriend, who in his mockery finally grasps the horror of the situation. The music, deafening in its suddenness, blares on, and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” plays loudly as zombies emerge, perform a stiff-limbed dance and surround the audience, ready to feast.
All right, I’m speculating, but I don’t think it’s too far from the truth. It’s kind of what A.J. Herrera, progenitor of the Inland Empire Comics Expo, would envision for his inaugural Zombie Beauty Pageant, although he remains mum about the exact details. Think Miss America going zombie….

This is a surprise move in terms of timing rather than action. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has made an announcement that as of December 29th this year, the studio will stop shipping all copies of the “Harry Potter” films on DVD and Blu-ray.The move is akin to Disney Studios with their animated film titles, releasing them on DVD and Blu-ray and then pulling them off shelves a year later to increase both their value and interest in a re-release.The key difference here however is “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2”. The last of the Potter films hits shelves on November 11th meaning both it and the Complete 8-Film Collection box set will only be available for a short window – just under two months.With this move its likely well see some sort of special edition DVD & Blu-ray sets offered down the track either late next year or in 2013.
