Even in blackest night or while disguising one’s geeky identity, a comic book fan can now buy, download and read the latest adventures of Green Lantern, Batman or the Amazing Spider-man on an illuminated smartphone screen, iPad or computer monitor.
Chances are, if you’ve seen a science fiction movie recently and been stunned to hear actual science mentioned, you have a scientific advisor to thank. A small cadre of science experts have started lending their expertise to movies like Thor, 2012, Tron Legacy and the upcoming Doctor Strange. Here’s their story, via Popular Mechanics’ David Kushner.
In late 2009, a writer, a producer, a director, and three scientists sat in a Los Angeles conference room. They were discussing Marvel’s Thor — a film based on a comic book that was in turn inspired by the Norse god of thunder — about an arrogant warrior who, at the start of the film, violates a truce by attacking the Frost Giants.

Attention SMALLVILLE fans who have been patiently waiting for the CW to come to their senses and simply hand over the titular role in their proposed [GREEN] ARROW reboot to heir apparent Justin Hartley: Don’t hold your breath! Or at least that was our main takeaway after getting a glimpse of a just released casting breakdown that mysteriously found its way into our inbox late last night.
What’s more, since we’ve always been a big proponent of the old adage “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” we thought rather than continue to bemoan what we can’t control, we’d have a little fun by choosing our dream cast for what sure looks to be shaping up to be a fantastic reboot. See for yourself, after the jump.

The long-gestating adaptation of the cult comic “Elfquest”, which has been in development at Warners for four years, looks to have been dumped.
Rawson Marshall Thurber was previously attached to direct the story of a tribe of elves trying to find others of their kind while avoiding humans and trolls. Comic co-creator Wendy Pini gave the following statement on the titles Facebook page:
“After close to four years of suspense – and longer than four years of your much-appreciated interest and support – the word has come down from Warner Bros. And the word is “no.” Their simple explanation is that they dont want to compete with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. This was a possibility, among several, that we were prepared for. It is a relief, at last, to know.
“Meanwhile another project that began life back in 2008, a CG animated adaptation of Eric Powells “The Goon” comic which David Fincher optioned, looks like it might have died on the vine.
Paul Giamatti and Clancy Brown voiced the characters of Franky and The Goon in a test footage reel in 2010. IFC spoke with Giamatti at Sundance this week and asked him how the film was progressing.
“I have no idea what the hell happened. I asked and no one knows. I guess they just ran out of money” he says. This matches comments from Fincher last year who suggested getting a project like this financed was extremely difficult.
If you love your promo shots, your superhero news factoids and your Marvel heroes, today is heaven for you. So many blue steel looks, so little time so lets gets started.
First up the gossip. A comment by actress Jenny Agutter to Radio Times about misparked trailers has been blown out of proportion to the point that some circles online firmly believe “The Avengers” will have a cameo by Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. Not true, move on.

Happy New Year All!
2012 is set to be another BIG year for comic books fans. The next book we are checking out is Locke & Key Volume 1 – Welcome to Lovecraft. Come join us at the end of January to talk about the book and other comic book news going on.
We’ll be trying out a new meeting spot – 4 Color Fantasies comic shop in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. They have comics, graphic novels, action figures, statues, card games, shirts, hats, snacks, drinks and more! It will be a fun place to hang out.
Locke & Key is critically acclaimed, even had a TV show in the works at one point in time (there’s a pilot floating around out there somewhere). From creators Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez under the IDW Publishing banner. 4 Color Fantasies was able to grab us copies at a decent price – only $15. Send me an email and we can work out getting it shipped/dropped off to you OR stop by 4 Color and pick up a copy.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting!
