You’d think with the latest real life news of “zombie’s in America” (see story here: Florida) and the ever saturated barrage of zombie themed games coming out on the app store daily that we would be looking for a little respite from the whole thing, right? WRONG!! Looks like we can’t get enough of the flesh eating, brainless killers. As long as it only exists behind an LCD screen. With the new season of Walking Dead out, Resident Evil 6 is about to hit the market later this year and now Zombies and Beers releasing end of the year, looks like we are in it for the long haul. At least with Zombies and Beers there seems to be a bit of humor in it as we hunt and shoot down the undead!

Santiago de Compostela (Spain) – June 29, 2012 – Moonbite, a European studio of games and animation based in Spain, is delighted to introduce its crazy new game Zombeer, Zombies & Beers®. Developed on a multiplatform engine in partnership with Padaone Games, Zombeer® is a first-person-survival-horror-comedy-shooter (FPSHCS) aimed at being released on PC, Mac and even such top-end platforms as the Playstation3® by the end of the year.

In a dark and near future, a mysterious plague is once again turning the world’s population into zombies. The main character named “K” awakens alone in a Mexican bar, after a night of “overindulging”. All alone, dizzy and disoriented, he realizes that this hangover doesn’t quite feel like ones he is used to. Indeed, he has been bitten by one of those nasty monsters and the virus inside him is gaining power. “K” will unintentionally discover that drinking beer is the only way to prevent it from taking over! But drink in moderation or you’ll totally lose control and be in trouble!
“Thanks to our creative team and our background in animation, we’ve designed Zombeer as a horror comedy full of action and beer, which is perfectly true to our tastes,” declared Carlos Fernandez, CEO of Moonbite. “Our team is very passionate about pop culture so the game proudly features many references to movies, comic books and games that we like. We have said that if Zombeer had a fragrance, it would be a mix between Las Vegas and a Tijuana dive bar. We can’t wait to unveil it and feed our fans with more videos and images of crazy and naughty zombies until the game releases!”
Full of action, humor and zombiness, Zombeer® will rock the world of survival-horror (mature) enthusiasts at the end of the year on PC, Mac and HD consoles!

Disney Animation Studios is developing the Marvel comic mini-series “Big Hero 6” as an animated feature film reports Its On the Grid via Blue Sky.

Disney Plans "Big Hero 6" Animated Film

Created in 1998, the Japan-based superhero team includes numerous Marvel characters such as Silver Samurai, GoGo Tomago, Honey Lemon, Hiro Takachiho, Baymax, Wasabi-No-Ginger, Sunpyre, Sunfire, Ebon Samurai and Fred.

Don Hall “Winnie the Pooh” is directing the film which he apparently pitched to John Lasseter. Lasseter reportedly “liked his take on the subject and approved it for development” but the project hasnt gotten the green light as yet. Yet apparently a potential 2014 release could happen. Kristina Reed is said to be producing.

One complication is that some of the characters originated in the “X-Men” comics and thus would not be able to appear as Fox owns the film rights to them.

They’ve just remade “Total Recall”, now producers Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe are setting their sights on a new version of another Paul Verhoeven sci-fi cult classic – “Starship Troopers”. First announced last December with “X-Men First Class” writers Edward Miller and Zack Stenz attached, this is being pitched as a more faithful take on Robert A. Heinlein’s novel about an interstellar war between mankind and a giant arachnoid species.

Jaffe confirms to Empire that this version will be closer in tone to Heinlen’s work “Verhoeven took it from one extreme and made it almost comical, whereas our job, as I see it, is to be a little more faithful to the book, and ground it a little more. The novel is extremely widely read, even today; it’s on school and university reading lists, and it’s read at all the military academies in the United States.”

One reason Verhoeven’s film remains a fan favourite was for its campy satirical swipe at fascism and militarism. Any such subversion however won’t be around in this much more straight forward approach, Jaffe saying “Verhoeven had an agenda that made his movie a critique of fascism, whereas I think Heinlein was writing from the perspective of someone who had served in World War II as an American soldier, and was writing it at the time of the Korean War. Y’know, one man’s fascism is another man’s patriotism.”

Also out? Verhoeven’s gory violence and fun flashes of tittilation – “The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to have it be that violent. It’s about re-interpreting it with a very new sensibility for a new generation that doesn’t really know the first film. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way.”

The one advantage the new version does seem to have is visual effects with Jaffe confirming they plan to make full use of the giant mechanical Jump Suits from the books which the heroes use to fight the bugs.

The Human Fly might be buzzing around a movie theater soon, as a film about the former Marvel Comic character is in development. A Human Fly comic, based on real-life stuntman Joe Ramacieri, was licensed and published by Marvel from 1977-1979. Over its 19-issue run and in various other Marvel comics, the Human Fly had run-ins with Spider-Man and Daredevil, among others in the Marvel stable.

Alan Brewer and Steven Goldmann picked up the reverted rights on the property recently. Eisenberg-Fisher Productions, which is based on the Paramount lot, will executive produce the proposed indie, with financing said to be coming from private-equity sources. Goldmann is poised to direct. Brewer, along with James Reach, will produce. Tony Babinski, Cirque Du Soleil’s in-house historian, wrote the Montreal-based screenplay. Goldmann is repped by Michael Lewis & Associates and Anarchy Management. Brewer and Babinski are repped by WME.

I had the pleasure of meeting Chris while working at Bento Box Interactive not too long ago as he came in and filled the very much needed position of Technical Director of the interactive eBook we were working on.  Very soft spoken and mild manner, this guy is one of the nicest men I’ve met with a really funny sense of humor. Just ask him about his hilarious tribute game about traffic in L.A.. OH, and he is a heck of a bowler 🙂

Let’s have a chat with him, shall we?

How did you get started in the game industry?

CHRIS:  I’ve always been most interested in 3D tools and pipelines and processes more than the actual product, but I realized some game projects have solid financial backing.

Tell me some of the games you worked on and did that enhance your passion for gaming or was it disenchanting?

CHRIS:  MLB: The Show for 4 years.  Now I can’t watch baseball on TV, but that’s a good thing.

What about games excites you?

CHRIS:  Doing things that nobody has ever done before, both technically and design.

What is your favorite game and why?

CHRIS:  I like open world games, Grand Theft Auto III was one of the first to really do this in a 3D way. Zork and Wizardry were the first games I played that felt like a virtual world. I am afraid to try Skyrim.
What is a game you hate and why? CHRIS:  Games that try to hide extreme lack of gameplay with fancy graphics….

If you could be any game character, who would it be?

CHRIS:  the Grue from Zork. or maybe I would make a Big Lebowski game so I could be The Dude….

How badly did the “OMG I’m working in gaming” bubble burst once you got in?

CHRIS:  When I realized that game designers (a tester got promoted to be VP at my first job) often don’t make good managers, I realized there would often be management issues in the game industry. the few good designers than can manage a team do well…..

What is the main difference you would say you realized after getting out of school?

CHRIS:  When I was in school I would go party on Friday nights, now on Friday’s I am more likely to fall asleep early.

Tell me something interesting or challenging that you went through and how you dealt with it/overcame it?

CHRIS:  Getting along with people under pressure is always a challenge.  I remember the times I was difficult to work with and try not to repeat those.  When my coworkers are being difficult, I try to defuse it in a positive way, often by reminding them they should be glad they’re not digging ditches for a job, or tell them stories of doing 3D on computers with 32 megs of ram…. walking to school with shoes made of cardboard, in the snow, uphill, both ways….

I gotta tell you, I love talking to gamers. They are always so colorful and have an interesting perspective on life and entertainment. They also tend to be a little silly at times which is ALWAYS A-Okay with me!!  Until next time, when we speak with another one of my gamer-geek friends…

Game On–Andrea
