Back From the Dead!
Okay well, “from the dead” is a little dramatic, maybe just back from a year of insanity, changes and new discoveries. Whatever you call it, it’s been nearly seven months since my last installment on the site and I’m sure many of you new comers are thinking, “who the heck is this broad??”
Well, I’ve been busy so put a lid on your attitude and get ready to rock 2011 with all new articles, reviews and even a few short stories, lovingly sent to you from my insanity, straight to your laptop.
First things first… Where the heck have i been?! Well in June we bought our first home and went thru the nightmarish process of fixing, painting and settling in, finally moved in the week after spending 4 days at the ComicCon in San Diego while being 6 months pregnant and working a 14 hour day full time. Oh, did I also mention I was going to school full time? Yeeeah, that was happening too. I finished my bachelors of science in psychology in October. Yes, that’s right folks… I now have a degree in BS. Take that!
Oh, and I had a baby in November. So within a 4 month period, I became a homeowner, a college graduate and a parent. Did I mention I’ve been busy?
The birth of my son has been a life altering, mind numbing and game changing event. Absolutely nothing in my life is the same and although every moment of my life is now busy, I am happier than I ever have been. Ever. I haven’t really wanted to do anything but take care of him ever since and it’s been near impossible to dig up any inspiration or desire to focus on anything but him.
So what, you may ask, is so important that I’d pull myself out of my seclusion and silence? What could possibly get my wheels turning enough to wander out of babyland and back into comic city?? Only one thing… Can you guess?
The proposed casting of miss Selina Kyle, my favorite comic book character of all time in Christopher Nolan’s newest installment of the Batman series; “The Dark Knight Rises”.
Here’s the most recent press release, care of Deadline.com:
[“Chris Nolan has lifted the veil off his third Batman film. He has set Anne Hathaway to play Selina Kyle, who has a double identity as Catwoman.”
“Warner Bros has a checkered history with the Catwoman; Michelle Pfeiffer was hailed for her performance as the feline in 1992’s Batman Returns. A subsequent attempt at a 2004 spinoff movie with Halle Berry was a flop. Hathaway has been vying for the role since last November, along with actresses that included Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman.”
Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”]

So. Let’s discuss.
Anne Hathaway… First film in 2001, a stumbling Disney princess with a gigantic smile and no balance.
There is no doubt Anne has come a long way since she took orders from Mary Poppins, but the question remains; can she be my Catwoman?
Even though she’s not yet 30 years old, her characters have grown from cardboard cutouts to a depth and clarity that showcases not only a talent for the art of acting but also an understanding of the human spirit. She’s believable when she’s sad and can bring a smile with her clever comedy style. She can even turn a chick flick character into something more real and powerful than the story itself had offered. All in all, I enjoy her art and have seen her grow exponentially in these last 11 years growing from childhood favorite to smokin’ hot woman.
However, that being said… The question remains; Can she be Selina? Can she be the face of batman’s counterpart? Can she pull off the depth of soul and passion of someone worthy, someone who can be his equal and ultimate antithesis simultaneously? Can she shed her princess tiara for a set of claws and most importantly, can we take her seriously??
With so much silliness and trite, superfluous comedy and chick flick history, can we look at her and believe her?
Her name itself imbibes images of light and beauty… Like William Halloway, a presence like hers cant help but be the light to batman’s dark and maybe that’s what will make it work.
Ultimately it all depends upon the story they go with and how they write her, which version of Selina they pursue
We’ve seen them push the envelope in the last two, dissecting and reinventing characters we thought we knew and gave them new life in ways we never expected.
I can speculate all day what it might be like but if the last two films are any indication, there’s absolutely no telling what they’ll do and what it might be like.
So in the mean time, I want to hear from you-
Who in today’s acting pool would you like to see sharpen her claws and take on this role to become YOUR Catwoman?
Natalie Portman? Mila Kunis? Angelina Jolie? Charlize Theron?
Let me know what you think!!
