Thor Screening

On May 6, 2011, the wait for the release of Marvel Studios’ next film is finally over, as Thor unleashes the Odinson’s power on the silver screen for all to see. Marvel Comics’ Norse God of Thunder, Thor, comes to movie theaters this summer in this long-awaited film adaptation directed by acclaimed direct Kenneth Branagh (Henry V) and starring Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, and Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin.

The anticipation for the God of Thunder’s movie has been building steadily for months, beginning with a teaser at the end of Iron Man 2 and then building with the release of subsequent promos – including the attachment of the first trailer to The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and other popular films, a Super Bowl ad spot, and the more recent unveilings of the newest trailer and TV spot.

Jerry Lawson, who developed the revolutionary gaming technology on the 1970’s, passed away on Saturday, 09 April 2011.

Before Lawson developed his programmable cartridges for the Channel F system in 1976, the available game systems were limited to whatever games that had been pre-built into the console. The ability to have a separate cartridge that contained the code for the games helped to change the way gaming technology could develop, and opened the doors for early giants such as the Atari 2600 a year later.

Although Lawson remained relatively obscure, despite his work, he was formally recognized last month by the International Game Developers Association for all of his contributions to the industry. These include a number of games and software he developed, both for Fairchild Semiconductor and later for Atari, through his company called Videosoft.

From Dark Horizons

Josh Pence is a guy who most recently starred in David Fincher‘s “The Social Network”, but even if you’ve seen it you wouldn’t recognise him.

That’s because the model and actor played one of the Winklevoss twins in the movie during production, a role that meant his head was digitally replaced in post-production with Armie Hammer’s in the scenes requiring both twins to appear simultaneously.

Now, Pence will get some proper time in front of the camera as he has scored a role in Christopher Nolan‘s final Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises” reports Heat Vision.

What’s surprising about this news is that what role he is playing seems to have leaked out and gives away a hint as to the film’s storyline. His role? A young Ra’s Al Ghul.

According to the report, Pence will be seen in flashbacks set three decades prior to the events in ‘Rises’, leading to speculation we will see the previous attempt by the League of Shadows to bring down Gotham City through an economic collapse – events the older Ra’s (Liam Neeson) made reference to in “Batman Begins”.

As previously reported Marion Cotillard was in discussions for a role in the film which was rumoured to be Ra’s daughter Talia, does this indicate that possibility is now more likely?

The other interesting potential is what this means for the overall story. Is the League making another attempt at Gotham City? With Ra’s having failed to enlist Bruce as the leader of his army the last time, could Talia have taken over and installed Bane in the same position?

Pence joins a cast that currently is confirmed to include Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Juno Temple.

From Deadline

Tim Miller, who has done strong visual effects work through his VFX house Blur Films, was just set by 20th Century Fox to make his feature directing debut on X-Men Origins: Deadpool, the X-Men spinoff film expected to star Ryan Reynolds. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are writing the script and Lauren Shuler Donner is producing.

In X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds made his first appearance as Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson, a smart-mouthed mercenary with terminal cancer who undergoes military experiments in an attempt to replicate Wolverine’s mutant healing factor. He comes away with the ability to heal quickly, but for the price of being indestructible he is rendered severely scarred. His acerbic attitude remains, though, earning him the nickname “The Merc with a Mouth.” Reynolds will next be seen starring as another superhero, Green Lantern, for Warner Bros.

Fox has the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men Origins: First Class coming out June 3. The Wolverine was expected to be the next one in production, but the studio and Hugh Jackman are looking for a new director after Darren Aronofsky fell out. The film could begin shooting in the fall, but that could take longer to get under way.

As for Miller, he created and owns Blur Studio, where he has directed numerous cutting-edge video game trailers. Blur is currently doing all the pre-vis for Ron Howard on The Dark Tower. Miller and Blur were also very involved in the attempt to re-imagine the animated anthology Heavy Metal with segments to be directed by him, Jim Cameron, Zack Snyder, and David Fincher.

Marvel has announced that starting in July, Rogers will return to his old costume and pick up the mantle as Captain America once more with the launch of Captain America #1. With the impending release of the live action movie featuring Cap, Marvel seems to be looking to give readers new and old a familiar character to read about as the current Captain America is his former sidekick Bucky.

The new Captain America series is to be written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Steve McNiven. The current Captain America storyline is to be re-branded as Captain America & Bucky, starting with issue #620, also in July. It will be written by Brubaker and Marc Andreyko with artwork by Chris Samnee.

In a historic promotion, BOOM! simultaneously released an all-new, all-original, free and completely sharable PRELUDE TO HELLRAISER #1 PDF (check #HellraiserPrelude on Twitter to obtain a copy) which aided in the dramatic sell out of Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER #1 within the first three days of release! BOOM! Studios also announces today that Clive Barkers HELLRAISER #1 will be going to second print and is available to order now through Diamond Comic Distributors with the following Diamond Code: FEB118159, as well as through Haven Distributors.

“From everyone in the HELLRAISER creative team and from everyone at BOOM! – thank you for making Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER #1 a sweeping success,” says BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “But we’re not stopping there, this is just the fuel that drives us to work even harder at making the HELLRAISER ongoing series the best it can be!”

“HELLRAISER, horror and comics fans have spoken, Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER #1 is a hit!” says BOOM! Studios Marketing Director Chip Mosher. “We worked hard to excite not only comics fans but horror fans everywhere looking for a gory treat with our PDF promotion. Seeing Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER #1 sell out and go to second print lets me know we’re reaching that goal!”

BOOM! Studios also received tremendous support from retailers both domestically and internationally for the release of Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER #1:

“The new HELLRAISER comic has been outstanding with many new faces coming in to see the new material by Mr. Barker,” says comic shop owner Gary Dills of Laughing Ogre Comics in Virginia and Ohio. “I am not shocked that this book has sold out so fast, and am glad that BOOM! will be keeping copies of #1 flowing for the many Clive Barker fans yet to experience HELLRAISER #1. BOOM!’s promotion of the comic outside the normal channels in conjunction with ComicsPRO store fronts was a great vehicle for driving new faces to stores and I think that they should be applauded for working outside the traditional comic media to promote this work!”

“Well played, BOOM! Studios for producing a digital comic, that actually created new customers for the local comic shops. BOOM! Studios marketed outside the traditional comic book fan sites and drew in valuable new faces. This is the type of savvy street smart marketing that the direct market needs from our Publishing partners in order for us all to thrive and grow.” says store owner Lawrence Doherty of Larry’s Wonderful World of Comics, Shows, Skate, Toys, Gaming in Massachusetts.

“BOOM! Studios positive “Comic Shop Friendly” promotions have trumpeted Clive Barker’s long awaited return to Hellraiser and could not be more successful! The only surprise was that it took two days in stores to sell out.” says store owner Ralph DiBernardo of Jetpack Comics in New Hampshire.

“Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER takes a horror icon in a new direction that has already, in a single issue, piqued the interest of both longtime fans and new readers alike. This is one to keep in stock for the long haul,” says store owner Thomas Gaul of CornerStoreComics in California.

“Reading this comic brought me back to when I first saw the movie,” says store owner Steve Clifton of Clifton’s Comics & Games in Ohio. “As chilling as the original, I can’t wait for more!”

“New Hellraiser? Easy sell. New Hellraiser written by Clive Barker himself? Unbelievably frickin’ easy sell!” says store owner Jay Bardyla of Happy Harbor Comics of Alberta, Canada.

The free PDF could be found hosted by some of the most popular comic and horror news websites online. Buzz circulated through the online community, especially through Twitter as followers could locate where to download the prelude PDF by searching the hashtag #HellraiserPrelude. All these efforts translated into a dramatic increase in sales causing Clive Barker’s HELLRAISER #1 to sell out in its third day, sending the hit horror series into second print!

“I’d like to personally thank the comic retailer trade organization ComicsPRO and our friends at Diamond Comic Distributors for helping make such a far-fetched concept like an all-new, all-original PRELUDE TO HELLRAISER #1 PDF a reality,” says BOOM! Studios Marketing Director Chip Mosher. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of both organizations and share the success of this sell out with them both.”
