CBR TV @ CCI: Jeph Loeb On “Avengers Assemble,” “Hulk: Agents of S.M.A.S.H.” – Comic Book Resources

Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb spent some time with CBR TV during Comic-Con International in San Diego to discuss Marvel Animation’s upcoming slate of series as well as its returning shows, but not before dipping into the history books to relate the story of his first CCI visit as a budding comic book writer pitching his DC Comics’ “Challengers of the Unknown” project to a young Jim Lee and Whilce Portacio before discovering his longtime collaborator Tim Sale’s work.

Before the topic shifts to television shows, Loeb discusses his level of involvement in the publishing division’s Marvel NOW! initiative, and while Loeb is currently unable to divulge how, he does confirm that he is involved with the line-wide reboot, expressing his excitement for the fans to hear about what’s coming in the months ahead.

Shifting to television, “Hulks: Agents of S.M.A.S.H.” is the first topic discussed, with Loeb explaining the origins of the series which is set to follow “Ultimate Spider-Man” on Disney XD, the influence “The Avengers” has had on the goals of Marvel Animation as a whole as well as on the Hulk specifically and the challenge of translating the movie version’s breakout popularity to television.

The controversy over “Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes” coming off the air to be replaced by “Avengers Assemble” is broken down, with Loeb explaining that from Marvel’s viewpoint, the former isn’t being cancelled so much as it’s being transformed into something that’s more in line with the movie, concentrating on a smaller cast of characters more familiar to the average viewer.
