“Chew’s” John Layman Takes A Bite Out Of DC’s “Detective Comics” – Comic Book Resources

Each month, readers of the Image series “Chew” meet one of the oddest crime solvers in comics as Tony Chu eats his way into madcap conspiracy theories and intrigue. Now this fall, the writer behind that book will bring his sensibilities to comics original detective series and the DC Universe’s most famous crime fighter.

DC Comics’ The Source blog today has the news that writer John Layman will join “Detective Comics” as its writer in October with issue #13. Taking over for departing writer/artist Tony Daniel, Layman will team with “Dark Knight” artist Jason Fabok and spin a tale apparently focusing on Batman’s latest battle with the Penguin.

“Obviously, this is a happily surreal and exciting turn-of-events for my career,” Layman told the blog. “Not only is this my first work within the DC Universe, but I get to work on one of DC’s undisputedly coolest and highest-profile characters. I’m going to take a look at the role of criminal organizations within Gotham City, hopefully from a perspective that does not get considered very often (if at all). From the symbiotic relationship a master criminal must have with Gotham in order to survive, to the lowly, often faceless criminal underling hoping to rise up the ranks. All that, plus Batman’s gonna play with a bunch of crazy new toys and kick all kinds of butt.”

This is a return, of sorts, for Layman who worked in Editorial at WildStorm a decade ago and previously wrote “ThunderCats” comics for the publisher’s West Coast arm. Though, as he notes, “Detective” marks his DCU debut on one of the most successful books of the New 52 relaunch.
