“Dredd” Sequel Talk & Judge Death Passed On – Dark Horizons
While “Judge Dredd” fans have been keen to see a sequel to the 2012 Karl Urban-led film based on the comic, it turns out one was already floated and passed on by 20th Century Fox.
Back in June, Urban said: “Unfortunately a sequel is no closer to happening , options have been discussed but there is no sequel in ‘development’.” At this past weekend at 2000AD’s 2000th Issue Celebration, Screen Geek spoke with “Dredd” co-creator John Wagner who believes a sequel to the film will happen but he’s not sure what form it will take:
“Well, there will be a sequel, I just don’t know when or who’ll do it but it’ll happen. It would work very well as a television show – it just depends on how it’s done. It could work very as a film. I mean – everyone wants to see Judge Death, don’t they?”
The surprise was that Wagner also revealed that “Dredd” and “Ex Machina” scribe Alex Garland originally penned a sequel script featuring the leader of the Dark Judges, but Fox passed on it:
“I wouldn’t mind seeing [Judge Death]. That was actually the first script that Alex Garland did was a Judge Death script but Fox, who they were dealing with at the time, turned it down. They wanted more nuts and bolts before they went into the [metaphysical].”
“Dredd” grossed $35 million worldwide.
