Favreau To Do A Live-Action “Star Wars” Series
Lucasfilm has announced that “Iron Man” and “The Jungle Book” director Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action “Star Wars” TV series for Disney’s direct-to-consumer platform launching in late 2019.
Favreau, who has played roles in both the “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” animated series and the upcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” is a natural fit for the franchise and is currently in production on Disney’s reimagining of “The Lion King” set for release in 2019.
Once he wraps work on that, he will then segue into doing the “Star Wars” series. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says in a statement:
“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”
Though the choice is understandable for Disney who plays it safe, the decision has already been met with an outcry from fans and industry insiders who want a woman or person of color to helm a “Star Wars” project.
The untitled “Star Wars” live-action series does not yet have a release date.
