Joseph Gordon-Levitt has scored one of the lead character roles in Robert Rodriguez’s highly anticipated “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” at Dimension Films.
Gordon-Levitt will play “Johnny,” a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game. Johnny is a new character in the Sin City world.
The follow-up to 2005’s “Sin City,” the cast also includes Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Dennis Haysbert and Jamie Chung.
Shooting is underway in Austin, Texas ahead of a October 4th 2013 release.
At the same time, Gordon-Levitt has reportedly passed on offers for both the “Godzilla” reboot at Legendary, and “Guardians Of The Galaxy” at Marvel.
Josh Brolin has joined the cast of Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” at Dimension Films.
Brolin will play Dwight, the same character played by Clive Owen in the 2005 original. This marks the third such re-casting of a role from the first film. The others being Dennis Haysbert replacing the late Michael Clarke Duncan, and Jamie Chung replacing Devon Aoki.
In ‘Dame,’ Dwight is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches his life go straight to hell. His storyline is set prior to the events in 2005’s “Sin City” and will explain how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face.
Brolin is the third new name to join the cast this week following the additions of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Christopher Meloni. The project is currently in production ahead of a release in October.
Add Law & Order: SVU alum Christopher Meloni to the cast of tough guys lined up for the Frank Miller/Robert Rodriguez-directed Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Meloni has landed a lead role in the film. He’ll be playing a cop, which might seem like stereotyping. But in the original Sin City, cops were the most hard-edged disreputable characters in the film.
So while Meloni might seem like the prototypical honest cop from his TV series run, if you’ve seen any of his work in the HBO series Oz, you’ll know he can play one frighteningly imposing dude capable of anything. Dimension Films is already in production on the film, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Dennis Haysbert and Jamie Chung, so far. I’ve heard whispers Josh Brolin is being courted and there are several others from the original cast who’d be welcomed back, but Meloni is for sure joining the mix.
After Deadline broke the news last night about Gordon-Levitt taking a starring role, the actor released a statement describing why he had to be part of this stylish noir thriller. Said Gordon-Levitt: “I love how the first movie uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality. Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr. Rodriguez.”
