Shots From The Studio #27
So this week I’d like to take a look at one of my latest art book acquisitions The Making and Art of Arcane by by Elisabeth Vincentelli (Author), Insight Editions (Author). This was just released on December 3rd by Insight Editions. It’s a pretty hefty tome weighing in at four pounds with just over 200 pages.
Now if you’ve been around me physically or digitally anytime over the past couple of years you’ve more than likely heard me singing the praises of the Netflix animated series, Arcane. Honestly that’s not going to change anytime soon…and certainly not today.
The second and final season premiered this month and continues the tradition of deep, intricate storytelling, rich, nuanced character development and, as I will discuss in this article, some of the most gorgeous animation and production design artwork ever produced.
Reports have been circulating that the two seasons,18 episodes total, cost around 250 million dollars to produce. Once you spend some time with this book you’ll see where every penny went. It covers every aspect from both seasons of the show from initial character development, to set design, to the pitch perfect music to the phenomenal voice acting.
There are multiple pages featuring designs for random background characters who never have a line of dialog and in depth design notes on all the various weapons that appear in the show. All of the main cast members, including Jinx, Vi, Ekko, Vander, Caitlin, Silco and more, have several pages showing their creation process initial rough ideas to their final designs.
As an added bonus the book includes several extra goodies as well such as a Jinx wanted poster as seen in the show, a map of Piltover and a stencil to use to spray paint Jinxs graffiti logo and more.
In conclusion if you’re a fan of Arcane, animation, or just great art I highly recommend this book.
