The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

The filmmakers behind the Oscar-winning “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” film trilogies are once again returning to Middle-Earth with a brand-new J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired epic fantasy tale set 183 years before the original “Rings” trilogy, exploring a new story centered around Helm’s Deep and the ancient fortress Hornburg.

Check out the official trailer for “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” a new animated feature film directed by award-winning Japanese anime filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, known for “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” and “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.” Kamiyama also contributed to Disney’s anime anthology series “Star Wars: Visions” with directing and writing the standalone episode “The Ninth Jedi.”

Miranda Otto, who starred in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, reprises her role as Eowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, serving as the film’s narrator. This anime feature, executive produced by Jackson, tells the tale of the House of Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Brian Cox), the legendary King of Rohan, as his people make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of Helm’s Deep. Gaia Wise, daughter of actors Emma Thompson and Greg Wise, voices Hera, Helm’s daughter, who must summon the courage to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy determined to destroy her people. The voice cast also includes Luke Pasqualino as Wulf, the ruthless Dunlending lord and the film’s primary antagonist.

The film is produced by Oscar winner Philippa Boyens, from the screenwriting team behind “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, alongside Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou (“Blade Runner: Black Lotus”). Executive producers include Peter Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh, along with Sam Register, Carolyn Blackwood, and Toby Emmerich. Additionally, Oscar-winning conceptual designer Alan Lee and Oscar-winning Weta Workshop co-founder Richard Taylor are contributing to the film’s conceptual design, with esteemed Tolkien illustrator John Howe also involved.

“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” is set to open theatrically worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 13th.
