WonderCon 2013 Set For Anaheim?
The location of next years WonderCon has been a major mystery. This year, the San Francisco show moved to Anaheim, an occurrence that looks to repeat for 2013. In an interview with Publishers Weekly, Comic-Con International VP of Marketing and Public Relations David Glanzer revealed WonderCon is currently set to return to Anaheim on March 29-31, 2013 — but its a little more complicated than it seems.
Up until the 2012 move, WonderCon was traditionally held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The Moscone Center construction is what prompted the move to Anaheim to keep the show in the spring. However, according to Glanzer, the Moscone Center had no available dates for spring 2013.
“However they thought they could give us dates in the fall, and let us know a year in advance,” Glanzer told Publishers Weekly. “But we wouldn’t know until this October.”
Rather than pass on either space, Comic-Con International decided to pursue both. Should CCI get dates for a Bay Area show, that show will be called WonderCon, while the show in Anaheim will be rebranded as a completely new convention for March 2013.
“We thought long and hard about it,” said Glanzer. “If we do get the fall dates in Moscone then WonderCon will be in SF and we’ll have to name the Anaheim show something else.”
This means that CCI will possibly be running a possible four-show schedule for 2013: Comic-Con International at San Diego, the Alternative Press Expo, WonderCon and the as-yet-unnamed Southern California show. Regardless of where WonderCon ends up this year, it seems likely this dilemma will rear its head again in 2014.
