A while back on the Panelcast I mentioned the budding controversy of a white power group that was upset about the inclusion of Nightrunner in the line up of the Batman Inc french chapter. I figured it would die down and be pretty much only be a blip on the radar of geeky comic news sites. Much was my surprise when I saw similar Nightrunner controversy get a segment on last night’s airing of The Daily Show. The segment didn’t deal with the opinions of the Council of Conservative Citizens (which totally sounds like a super villain group BTW) but the opinions of just one guy, illustrator Bosch Fawstin, who, like the CCC is concerned that this young, Muslim, FICTIONAL character is somehow a secret terrorist.

So, on the old site I used to write columns on a regular basis.  Well, ok maybe not so regular of a basis but still, they were written and things were said.  I had to stop due to lack time.   Well today I am forcing myself to have the time to write this one.

There are TONS of talented people here are Forbidden Panel.  More than I know what to do with.  I always feel so lucky to have been able to find myself surrounded by such amazing and wonderful talent.  So I think every now and then I will write about them as a way to introduce them to world while we wait for them to finish the projects they are working on for us.

Cameron Dortch is someone to look out for.  He has amazing energy and motivation and I often find myself in awe of his determination.  He is an artist with a mind and sense of humor to parallel  my own.  But more importantly he has skill.

Currently he is working on a project with his fiance called Black Friday.  It is a comic about how people become so overwhelmed with their shopping madness that they themselves turn into monsters and bring out the worst as human beings.  We here are very excited to see it.

He is also an artist on our new webcomic, Security. He is working along side other artists in order to help bring this series alive.  It’s exciting to see his energy when working on these projects.  His desire to make these dreams come true is awesome.  You can visit his art stylings by visiting his Facebook page.

I choose Cameron to be the first spotlight not because of his enthusiasm or drive but because of the recent atrocity that has befallen him.  Many of you maybe familiar with the show Face Off.  It is a show on SyFy that shows different makeup artists competing for a chance to work on a major Hollywood horror film.  Recently, they held a contest to see who would become the next contestants on the show.  Cameron, who has been doing SFX makeup for years, submitted for the contest.  Unfortunately he did not qualify.

I say unfortunately not for him but for Hollywood and the show as well.  Cameron is hard working, imaginative, driven, and as I said before, skilled.  His dream to work in the industry has be roadblocked.  I don’t know why he wasn’t given the opportunity to become a contestant on the show.  But what I do know is that it is a shame.  A shame that they have overlooked this talented individual.

I hope that Cameron doesn’t allow this to sidetrack him anyway.  I know I will continue to do my best to motivate him and push him until he is able to achieve his dream.  Please help me in supporting him by letting him know that you out there recognize his talent.

You can view his submission by clicking HERE.  His entry is on page 13.  You can see them in full size below.

Check out his Facebook page to see more in his gallery and stay tuned to Forbidden Panel as we will have more from Cameron in the upcoming years.  SyFys loss is our gain!

Wherein the awesome Melly returns and we discover the link between hockey and comics… what?

*Sorry this is so late.

Okay well, “from the dead” is a little dramatic, maybe just back from a year of insanity, changes and new discoveries.  Whatever you call it, it’s been nearly seven months since my last installment on the site and I’m sure many of you new comers are thinking, “who the heck is this broad??”

Well, I’ve been busy so put a lid on your attitude and get ready to rock 2011 with all new articles, reviews and even a few short stories, lovingly sent to you from my insanity, straight to your laptop.
First things first… Where the heck have i been?! Well in June we bought our first home and went thru the nightmarish process of fixing, painting and settling in, finally moved in the week after spending 4 days at the ComicCon in San Diego while being 6 months pregnant and working a 14 hour day full time. Oh, did I also mention I was going to school full time? Yeeeah, that was happening too. I finished my bachelors of science in psychology in October. Yes, that’s right folks… I now have a degree in BS. Take that!
Oh, and I had a baby in November. So within a 4 month period, I became a homeowner, a college graduate and a parent. Did I mention I’ve been busy?

The birth of my son has been a life altering, mind numbing and game changing event. Absolutely nothing in my life is the same and although every moment of my life is now busy, I am happier than I ever have been. Ever. I haven’t really wanted to do anything but take care of him ever since and it’s been near impossible to dig up any inspiration or desire to focus on anything but him.
So what, you may ask, is so important that I’d pull myself out of my seclusion and silence? What could possibly get my wheels turning enough to wander out of babyland and back into comic city?? Only one thing… Can you guess?

The proposed casting of miss Selina Kyle, my favorite comic book character of all time in Christopher Nolan’s newest installment of the Batman series; “The Dark Knight Rises”.
Here’s the most recent press release, care of

[“Chris Nolan has lifted the veil off his third Batman film. He has set Anne Hathaway to play Selina Kyle, who has a double identity as Catwoman.”

“Warner Bros has a checkered history with the Catwoman; Michelle Pfeiffer was hailed for her performance as the feline in 1992’s Batman Returns. A subsequent attempt at a 2004 spinoff movie with Halle Berry was a flop. Hathaway has been vying for the role since last November, along with actresses that included Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman.”

Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”]

So. Let’s discuss.

Anne Hathaway… First film in 2001, a stumbling Disney princess with a gigantic smile and no balance.

There is no doubt Anne has come a long way since she took orders from Mary Poppins, but the question remains; can she be my Catwoman?

Even though she’s not yet 30 years old, her characters have grown from cardboard cutouts to a depth and clarity that showcases not only a talent for the art of acting but also an understanding of the human spirit. She’s believable when she’s sad and can bring a smile with her clever comedy style.  She can even turn a chick flick character into something more real and powerful than the story itself had offered.  All in all, I enjoy her art and have seen her grow exponentially in these last 11 years growing from childhood favorite to smokin’ hot woman.
However, that being said… The question remains; Can she be Selina?  Can she be the face of batman’s counterpart? Can she pull off the depth of soul and passion of someone worthy, someone who can be his equal and ultimate antithesis simultaneously? Can she shed her princess tiara for a set of claws and most importantly, can we take her seriously??
With so much silliness and trite, superfluous comedy and chick flick history, can we look at her and believe her?

Her name itself imbibes images of light and beauty… Like William Halloway, a presence like hers cant help but be the light to batman’s dark and maybe that’s what will make it work.
Ultimately it all depends upon the story they go with and how they write her, which version of Selina they pursue
We’ve seen them push the envelope in the last two, dissecting and reinventing characters we thought we knew and gave them new life in ways we never expected.
I can speculate all day what it might be like but if the last two films are any indication, there’s absolutely no telling what they’ll do and what it might be like.

So in the mean time, I want to hear from you-

Who in today’s acting pool would you like to see sharpen her claws and take on this role to become YOUR Catwoman?

Natalie Portman? Mila Kunis? Angelina Jolie?  Charlize Theron?

Let me know what you think!!

So, after my splurge of  reading, mostly in the form of The Science Of Superheroes and the fantastic Mark Waid series Incorruptible and Irredeemable and the amusing but kinda lackluster Pinocchio: Vampire Hunter, I find myself not knowing were to turn next for my comic reading.  I suppose I can finally catch up on Brian Wood’s DMZ…….

Where to turn now? «.
