HBO Cancels Three Shows, Renews One | News | Dark Horizons
HBO seems to be clearing house before the new year with word that they’ve cancelled three of its comedic dramas while giving a renewal to another.
The Laura Dern-led “Enlightened”, which earned two Golden Globe nominations last week for best comedy series and best actress, has been renewed for a second season. Reviews have been strong but ratings have been rather dire, however the cabler is a network where ratings are rarely a deciding factor.
Still the network has decided to swing the axe on three others. Both “Hung” starring Thomas Jane, and “Bored To Death” with Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis, have been given the chop after three seasons.
The network has also nixed the NY fashion scene-set “How To Make It In America” after two seasons. “Hung” was the highest rater of the four and Thomas Jane scored a second Golden Globe nomination last week for his work in it.
The futures of the network’s dramas like “Boardwalk Empire,” “Game of Thrones,” “True Blood” and “Treme” remain bright. The upcoming third season of “Eastbound & Down” is already set to be the show’s last, while many hope a ninth season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” will happen.
Imported limited series like the British “Life’s Too Short” and the Aussie “Angry Boys” will help fill out some of the network’s comedy slots early next year, as will Armando Iannucci’s new comedy “Veep”.
